Why material beats branding in the first spec call
I review dozens of pouch specs each month. The most expensive mistake is picking kraft for brand story when the product is oily trail mix that needs 12-month shelf life. The bag looks great for six weeks, then returns spike.
Start with water activity (a_w), fat percentage, and target shelf life — then pick structure. Our material selector tool maps those inputs to laminate recommendations; this guide explains the trade-offs in plain procurement language.
Every structure below is available from 100 units at ZentPak. MOQ does not change when you upgrade from kraft to foil — only unit price and lead time (foil laminates may add 2–3 days for material staging).
Kraft paper laminates
Kraft exterior with PE food-contact inner layer is the default for eco-positioned dry snacks, bakery, and short-rotation coffee. Oxygen transmission is moderate — fine for products consumed within 90 days.
Cost index is the lowest in our portfolio: roughly $0.28–0.42/unit at 1,000 units for a stand-up pouch with zipper. Compost and recyclability claims depend on whether the structure is mono-PE or multi-layer — we label each SKU honestly in quotes.

PET/PE is the general-purpose workhorse: good oxygen and moisture barrier, compatible with digital and flexo print, 6–12 month shelf life for most dry foods. We use it for pet treats, supplements, and moderate-fat snacks.
Aluminum foil laminate adds a metalized or pure foil layer for coffee, nuts, and high-fat products. Oxygen transmission drops roughly 10× vs kraft. Expect $0.08–0.15/unit premium at 1,000 units — still cheaper than product write-offs from stale inventory.
Both structures support degassing valves, tear notches, and child-resistant zippers on request.
Compostable PLA structures
PLA and PLA-PE bio-laminates serve brands that need BPI or EN 13432 claims for retail listings. Barrier performance is adequate for dry products with moderate shelf life (4–9 months) but drops in high-heat fill or oily applications.
Unit cost runs 25–40% above PET/PE at the same size. We only recommend compostable structures when the claim is a buying requirement — not for marginal sustainability storytelling.
Industrial compost facility access varies by market. We document end-of-life instructions on the dieline proof so your legal team can review claims before print.
Matching material to channel
DTC coffee with 4-week rotation: kraft or PET/PE with valve — lowest cost, adequate barrier.
Grocery or Amazon with 6-month expiry: foil laminate minimum; verify fat and nut content with our team.
Festival or ESG-led launch: PLA compostable with certified structure — budget extra for material and shorter shelf life.

FAQ
Is kraft paper compostable?
Kraft paper alone is recyclable in many markets, but most food pouches include a PE inner liner. Compost claims require a certified mono-material or industrially compostable structure — we specify which applies on your quote.
When do I need foil instead of PET/PE?
Switch to foil when shelf life must exceed 9 months, fat content is high, or you sell whole-bean coffee with degassing valves. PET/PE works for most dry snacks under 6 months.
Can I order material samples before production?
Yes. Sample kits include printed pouches in your chosen laminate. Order from $49 or request swatch books with unprinted film stacks for barrier testing.
