Dieline Design Tips: What Print Professionals Know

  • Always keep artwork 2mm inside the cut lineThe "safe zone" is 2-3mm inside the cut line. Any critical text or logos outside this zone risk being trimmed off during die-cutting.
  • Account for gusset fold allowanceGusset panels fold inward when the pouch is filled. Your side-panel artwork will appear narrower on the filled pouch than on the flat dieline. Add 2-3% stretch tolerance.
  • Mark glue areas clearlyGlue flaps (typically 12-15mm) must be free of ink and coating. Our dielines show glue zones — share these with your printer to confirm compatibility with their adhesive system.
  • Include registration marks for multi-panel alignmentFor pouches with front + back design, add registration marks at all 4 corners. This helps the printer align both sides perfectly during lamination.

What is a dieline?
A dieline is a technical drawing that shows the exact shape, dimensions, fold lines, and glue areas of a package. Printers use dielines to create cutting dies — the metal blades that cut your packaging to shape. An accurate dieline ensures your artwork aligns perfectly with the physical package.
Do I need a dieline before designing artwork?
Yes. Always get the dieline first, then design your artwork within its safe zone. Without a dieline, your design may not align with folds, seals, or cut edges — leading to costly reprints. Our generator gives you the dieline instantly so you can start designing with confidence.
What is bleed and why does it matter?
Bleed is the extra 3-5mm area beyond the cut line that ensures your artwork extends all the way to the edge after cutting. Without bleed, you risk white slivers at the edges of your package. All our dielines include standard 3mm bleed zones.
What file format do I need for print?
Most printers require vector files: AI (Adobe Illustrator), PDF, or EPS. For v1, our tool exports a PNG specification you can share with your printer or use as a reference when designing artwork. Vector export (PDF/SVG) is planned for a future update.
